Description
The HbA1c, Glycated hemoglobin test is also known as hemoglobin A1C test or glycosylated hemoglobin test. It is a common blood test that is used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It helps in monitoring the management of diabetes. It measures the average levels of blood glucose (sugar) for the past two to three months. It specifically measures the percentage of hemoblogin (Hb) (protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen) which is coated with sugar (glycated). Blood glucose will capture the changes in blood sugar that occur on a daily basis, the highs and the lows. The HbA1c is an indication that “in general” if glucose has been elevated over the last few months or “in general” it has been normal. The HbA1c, Glycated hemoglobin test is done: • To identify if a person has a risk of developing diabetes in future • To confirm the diagnosis of diabetes • To monitor the treatment plan of diabetes
